אֵ֣ל נַ֭עֲרָץ בְּסוֹד־קְדֹשִׁ֣ים רַבָּ֑ה וְ֝נוֹרָ֗א עַל־כׇּל־סְבִיבָֽיו׃

The majesty of God is most vividly reflected in His position at the head of the heavenly assembly. In this celestial court, divine sublimity casts a profound sense of awe and trembling specifically upon the spiritual beings stationed closest to Him. God is recognized as a mighty and honorable force, inspiring immense power and reverence [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This reverence is deeply felt within the gathering of the holy ones, the ministering angels. When considering the nature of this angelic gathering, the primary approach among commentators is that it consists of a massive, vast multitude of angels standing in assembly [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, others suggest that the greatness described here refers not to the number of angels, but to the sheer intensity of their fear, meaning the angels experience an overwhelming and immense awe of God [רד״ק, מאירי].

This intense reverence extends to all the ministers surrounding the Throne of Glory. Some view this description as a poetic repetition meant to emphasize the atmosphere of dread [רד״ק, מאירי]. Others, however, see a deliberate distinction between different realms of creation. For instance, this can be understood as a division between the bodiless, purely spiritual angels and the physical celestial bodies that surround Him [אבן עזרא]. Another perspective explains that God is revered specifically among the angels appointed over miracles and wonders. Because these forces can do absolutely nothing without His command, a tremendous awe falls upon His entire immediate environment [מלבי״ם].

A profound spiritual principle regarding closeness to God emerges from this dynamic. The fear of God rests much more heavily on those drawn near to Him than on those who are distant. God is exacting with those in His inner circle, judging them to a hairsbreadth. The closer a being is to God, the greater the expectation for awe and absolute perfection [תורה תמימה].

Against the backdrop of this overwhelming angelic dread, where heavenly beings tremble and even sweat fire from fear, the unique spiritual level of the righteous stands out. Unlike the angels who are struck with terror, righteous individuals, such as Abraham, were able to serve as a vehicle for the Divine Presence and speak directly with God without experiencing paralyzing anxiety. This difference stems from their very nature. Angels are separate, created beings who acutely feel the overwhelming distance between themselves and their elevated Creator. In contrast, the souls of the righteous are an actual portion of God from above. Because of this intrinsic bond, the Divine Presence rests upon them naturally and with a deep sense of connection, without triggering the same shattering dread [אלשיך].
