Psalms 89:27Sefaria

The relationship between God and His chosen leader, whether David or the Messiah, rests on a foundation of profound trust and absolute dependence. The leader recognizes that all power, existence, and rescue flow exclusively from a divine source. Without this constant support, a person is entirely helpless and bound to fall

When the leader reaches out to God, it is an expression of a deep emotional bond. The primary approach among commentators is that this connection represents true devotion, a tight relationship, and absolute dedication to God It is a direct response to God's initial choice to elevate him. Through this devotion, the leader openly acknowledges that he possesses no independent strength and that all his assistance comes from God alone

This deep sense of security is likened to the complete trust a son places in his father [מצודת דוד]. The relationship is actively lived out through dedicated service, mirroring a loyal son who honors his parent [מאירי]. The metaphor of a father captures both existential and developmental care. Just as a human father brings a child into the world, provides for his needs, nurtures his natural abilities, and protects him until he reaches maturity, God actively sustains and develops the leader [מלבי״ם].

Beyond personal, fatherly care, the leader also relies on God as his ultimate rescue, viewing Him as an unyielding source of strength and power [מצודת ציון]. While the image of a father symbolizes personal existence and individual oversight, turning to God in His divine capacity reflects accepting Him as the ultimate guide who grants wisdom and faith. In this role, God acts as a saving king. He shields the leader from all distress and enemies, guaranteeing his political success and physical safety so that no opponent can ever overpower him [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].
