לֹא־יַשִּׁ֣יא אוֹיֵ֣ב בּ֑וֹ וּבֶן־עַ֝וְלָ֗ה לֹ֣א יְעַנֶּֽנּוּ׃

God guarantees absolute protection for David, shielding him from those who wish to do him harm through various forms of attack. The primary approach among commentators views this failed attack through the lens of debt and dominance. Just as a creditor takes control of a debtor's property, hostile forces will never overpower David, control him, or strip him of his belongings [רש״י, רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודות, שטיינזלץ, המאירי]. Alternatively, this protection extends beyond physical dominance to intellectual and spiritual defense. In this view, the enemy's failure is one of deception; they will be entirely unable to trick David, tempt him, or lead him away from his devotion to God [אבן עזרא, המאירי, שטיינזלץ].

The promise of safety also ensures David will be secure from physical torture and bodily harm at the hands of the wicked [רד״ק, מצודת ציון]. Commentators differ on the exact identity of these hostile forces. Some view the enemy and the wicked person as the exact same threat [רד״ק], while others identify the wicked specifically as the hostile nations of the world [המאירי]. A deeper distinction separates these foes by their methods of attack. One type of enemy harbors open hatred but relies on words, deception, and temptation to cause damage. The other is a wicked force that inflicts actual physical pain. God's promise ensures that neither the verbal manipulator nor the physical attacker will succeed [מלבי״ם].

Beyond the literal battlefield, there is a deeply spiritual dimension to this protection. In this light, the enemy is not an outside person, but rather the internal evil inclination and Satan. God promises that He will not allow this inner urge to act as a harsh creditor, constantly tallying up a debt of sins. Instead, God actively cleanses David of his mistakes each day through purifying hardships. Because of this constant spiritual cleansing, the resulting impurity—viewed as a wicked offspring born directly from sin itself—loses its power. It cannot torture him or drag him down into further wrongdoings [אלשיך].
