Psalms 89:28Sefaria

Genuine devotion to God is met with extraordinary divine elevation. In response to King David’s deep dedication and his recognition of God as his father, God grants him an unprecedented royal status that reflects a close and unique bond. Because David reached out and called God his father, God responds in kind by elevating David to the rank of a firstborn This title serves as an expression of greatness, importance, and a highly favored position above all other sons or rulers Just as a firstborn historically receives a larger inheritance, this unique status grants David a double measure of power and authority over every king on earth [אלשיך].

To emphasize this point, the promise reinforces the idea, making it perfectly clear that David will hold absolute supremacy over the rulers of all nations This was not merely a spiritual promise, but a historical reality. During his reign, foreign kings surrendered to David, served him, and brought him tribute [רד״ק].

This supreme authority was a direct reward for David's character and actions. After Saul's kingship ended, David became the first king in Israel to truly and faithfully serve God, always acknowledging Him as the true source of his strength and salvation [אבן עזרא]. Furthermore, David never chased personal glory or dominance. His only request was that God be his protector and save him from falling under the control of foreign nations. Because he sought only God's help rather than his own honor, God rewarded him by flipping the dynamic entirely, placing him high above those very nations [אלשיך].
