The foundations of existence and the certainty of divine promises rest entirely on two central pillars: kindness and faithfulness. By looking at the physical world and the fixed patterns of the sky, a person can find eternal witnesses to God's unwavering loyalty. This reflection begins as an inward thought, a deep, personal realization within the heart about how reality itself is structured [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מאירי].

There are two main ways to understand the role of kindness in this grand design. The first perspective focuses on the literal creation of the physical universe. The world was brought into existence out of nothing through an act of absolute, unprompted divine kindness, as nothing existed beforehand to earn or require its creation [מלבי״ם, אלשיך, מאירי]. A practical expression of this foundational kindness occurred in the earliest days of humanity. God permitted Cain to marry his sister, an act that would later be strictly forbidden, simply to ensure that the world could be populated and expanded [תורה תמימה].

Alternatively, the concept of kindness here points not to the physical creation of the universe, but to the idea of eternity. In this view, the focus is on the enduring nature of God's promise to King David. The divine kindness that granted David the throne was never meant to be a temporary event. Instead, it is a lasting foundation, guaranteed to be built up and maintained forever [רש״י, רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד].

Moving from kindness to faithfulness, the heavens serve as the ultimate symbol of absolute stability. God established the skies to reflect an unchanging promise [רד״ק, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Just as the heavens stand forever and their systems, such as the sun, the moon, and the changing seasons, operate in a fixed and reliable order, God's faithfulness remains permanent and secure [אלשיך, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מאירי].

Connecting these two ideas reveals a clear progression in how God guides reality. While the initial creation and early building of the world were driven solely by pure kindness, the ongoing maintenance of the laws of nature is rooted in truth and faithfulness, ensuring that everything continues to function properly [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, this heavenly and orderly stability acts as a firm guarantee. It proves that God's loyalty and His ancient promise to the descendants of David will remain true, secure, and fulfilled for all of eternity [רש״י, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
