Psalms 89:13Sefaria

The natural world, with all its vast borders, extreme climates, and sharp contrasts, serves as a grand witness to a single, unifying Creator. God's absolute authority over the earth is displayed through a sweeping geographical and spiritual map. Looking across the globe, the north and the south represent the extreme poles. In ancient orientation, a person faces east toward the front of the world, naturally placing the south on the right side [מצודת דוד]. The primary approach among commentators is that the great mountains of Tabor and Hermon complete this compass, with Tabor symbolizing the west and Hermon representing the east [אבן עזרא, מאירי]. Alternatively, these two peaks are highlighted simply because they are the highest and most prominent mountains standing at opposite ends of the Land of Israel [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון].

Beyond mere geography, the layout of the earth reveals deep climatic contrasts that highlight God's power. The extreme edges of the world in the north and south are uninhabitable due to freezing cold and intense heat. These regions were formed in a raw, unrefined state, unfit for human settlement, while the temperate middle zones were designed to flourish and sustain life [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. A similar sharp contrast exists between the mountains themselves. Mount Tabor is lush, overflowing with grain and fruit trees, whereas Mount Hermon is so tall and freezing that snow covers its peak even at the height of summer [רד״ק, אלשיך].

This physical map carries a profound theological message, directly challenging the ancient belief in opposing divine powers. The north traditionally symbolizes strict justice and hardship, while the south represents kindness and abundance. By bringing these extremes together, the physical world proves that God alone created and governs both forces [אלשיך].

The natural world responds to this divine mastery with a song of joy. While mountains cannot literally speak, their very existence, unshakable stability, and vibrant growth serve as a silent song of gratitude to the Creator [מאירי, מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, their breathtaking height and raw power inspire the people who look upon them to sing praises to God [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. This joy is also rooted in the historical miracles that took place on these specific slopes. At Mount Tabor, God brought down the mighty army of Sisera, and at Mount Hermon, a great miracle occurred for the Israelites when the Amorite forces were crushed inside the rocky caves. Therefore, despite their vastly different climates and features, both mountains share a unified purpose of broadcasting God's miraculous deeds to the world [אלשיך].
