תהלים, פרק פ״ט, פסוק נ״א

Psalms 89:51Sefaria

The cry of the exile rises from a place of deep suffering under the oppressive weight of foreign nations. The plea to God to remember this humiliation is not merely a private prayer, but the expression of a historical, national pain carried every day by a wandering people. The enemies constantly hurl insults and humiliation at Israel [אבן עזרא, המאירי]. They mock the exiles, claiming that their hope is completely lost and that they will never find salvation [רד״ק]. Yet, this humiliation runs much deeper, as the disgrace absorbed by the people is ultimately directed at God Himself. The nations attack Israel specifically because the people continue to serve God and maintain their faith, and this mockery is rooted in a fundamental denial of God [מלבי״ם].

This experience is a heavy burden of suffering [מצודת דוד], a constant weight of disgrace that the exiled person must drag along [רש״י, רד״ק, המאירי]. Holding this accumulated disgrace of many nations close to the chest [מלבי״ם, המאירי] captures the suffocating feeling of foreign powers pressing down on the individual, an oppressive weight that simply cannot be shaken off [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This suffocating pressure is not just a broad national concept, but the deeply personal and painful cry of every single person living in exile [רד״ק].

A completely different perspective views this plea through the eyes of Abraham. In this approach, Abraham is the one who carries all the nations close to him, as the world receives its blessings through his merit. In the past, Abraham prevented King David from entirely destroying the foreign nations. He ensured they would remain so that Israel could experience exile among them and undergo a necessary process of spiritual refinement. With this in mind, the plea becomes an urgent call for God to hurry and bring salvation. The entire purpose of the nations' existence, and the reason Abraham carries them, was solely to facilitate this spiritual refinement for Israel. Now that this purpose has been fulfilled, the time for redemption has arrived [אלשיך].
