Psalms 89:45Sefaria

A profound lament captures the sudden and tragic collapse of the Davidic dynasty. The royal family, once defined by its unmatched glory, high status, and unshakable stability, is brought to a sudden halt. A sharp contrast is drawn between the bright, unblemished past of the kingdom and its current crushed and humiliated reality. God has completely removed the king's honor and authority, bringing an abrupt end to his reign

The loss of the kingdom's former state is understood in a few distinct ways. The primary approach among commentators is that the royal family lost its brilliant glow and success, which once shone as brightly as the midday sun or the clear, open skies Another perspective suggests that the loss refers to the kingdom's spiritual merit. In the past, the royal family possessed a clean record and a spiritual immunity that protected them, but this shield was ultimately taken away [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, this loss of purity points directly to the destruction of the Holy Temple, the most pure place on earth. Although King David did not build the Temple himself, it is attributed to him because he initiated the project and gathered the silver and gold required for its construction [אבן עזרא].

On a deeper conceptual level, the fading glory of the royal family mirrors the natural cycle of the moon. Just as the moon gradually waxes until it reaches its fullest and brightest point in the middle of the month, the Davidic dynasty grew in strength and splendor until it peaked during the reign of King Solomon, who represented the fifteenth generation from Abraham. Following this peak, the moon begins to wane, just as the kingdom slowly diminished over the generations. This decline continued until the twenty-ninth generation under King Zedekiah. At that final point, the Temple was destroyed, the king was sent into exile, and the guiding light of the monarchy was entirely put out [אלשיך].

The ultimate downfall of the dynasty is marked by the physical and symbolic shattering of the royal throne. The seat of power was not merely emptied but actively humiliated, thrown backward, and violently cast down to the ground to collapse in ruin
