Deuteronomy 33:15Sefaria

The blessing bestowed upon the tribe of Joseph paints a picture of extraordinary agricultural and spiritual wealth. Rooted in the mountainous terrain of Ephraim and Manasseh, this prosperity does not merely fall from the sky but springs directly from the fertile earth of their homeland The bounty of this land is characterized by its supreme quality, offering the very best and most precious produce, much like a fine perfume [אבן עזרא, רבינו בחיי, אבי עזר, ביאור יש״ר], rich in goodness and sweetness [אבן עזרא, בכור שור].

The primary approach among commentators focuses on the agricultural advantage of this mountainous region. Because of their high elevation, the peaks in Joseph's territory receive abundant sunlight, causing their crops to ripen much earlier than those in the rest of the land Beyond simply ripening early, produce grown in these highlands is considered vastly superior to that of the valleys [רבינו בחיי]. The region is also blessed with highly specialized vegetation. The highest ancient peaks produce rare, potent medicinal herbs not meant for normal consumption, while the enduring hills yield unique foods that thrive in constant snow [העמק דבר], alongside dates and vines that remarkably grow directly from the rocky surface [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, these hills possess an enduring fertility, yielding fruit continuously and never failing, even in times of severe drought

Alongside the agricultural benefits, many commentators identify a profound historical layer to the landscape. The ancient mountains of this region are understood to have been formed during the six days of creation, long before other mountains existed. Because of their sheer antiquity, they are infused with a special blessing and a level of God's providence not found in newer geological formations This historical precedence translates into spiritual precedence as well; the mountains of Joseph, which once housed the Tabernacle in Shiloh, actually preceded the Temple Mount in Jerusalem in their holiness [צפנת פענח].

A deeper, symbolic layer connects this physical topography to the very founders of the nation. The towering ancient mountains represent the enduring merit of the Patriarchs, while the everlasting hills symbolize the merit of the Matriarchs This distinction is rooted in the concept that mountains embody the masculine power of giving and influencing, whereas hills represent the feminine strength of receiving [תורה תמימה]. For Joseph specifically, this blessing highlights his profound bond with his father, Jacob, and his mother, Rachel, whose tent was a resting place for the Divine Presence. Because of this deep ancestral connection, God remained with Joseph even during his dark exile in Egypt. Ultimately, it was this inherited merit of the ancestors and the Torah that empowered Joseph's descendant, Joshua, to defeat the Canaanite kings and conquer the land [אלשיך].
