Exodus 6:14Sefaria

In the midst of the dramatic events of the Exodus, the narrative pauses to present a detailed family lineage. This sudden break serves to firmly establish the status of the newly appointed leaders, Moses and Aaron, by tracing their roots deep within the nation. By detailing their human origins, showing that they are flesh and blood with ordinary family ties, the text prevents any future attempts to view them as divine beings

The individuals highlighted in this lineage are the honorable leaders and princes of the nation Tracing the ancestry of Moses and Aaron emphasizes a core principle: leaders are only appointed over Israel if their roots reach all the way back to Jacob. Their selection is a testament to their worthiness, built upon the foundation of their holy and distinguished ancestors Furthermore, the focus on ancestry highlights that the Israelites, unlike the Egyptians, preserved their pure, royal heritage and did not assimilate into other nations

Although the primary goal of this lineage is to introduce the tribe of Levi, from which Moses and Aaron descend, the record begins with Reuben, the firstborn. The primary approach among commentators is that this order prevents the false impression that Levi was the eldest. By carefully listing Levi's older brothers, the narrative maintains the honor of Moses and Aaron while accurately preserving Reuben's status as the true firstborn. The specific sons of Reuben listed are those who originally went down to Egypt, establishing the central branches of the tribe [שד״ל].

Another perspective views this sequence as a reflection of a divine search. God examined the tribes in order of their birth to find the right leaders for the redemption. He first looked to Reuben and Simeon but did not find individuals suited for the mission at that time. Only upon reaching Levi did He find Moses and Aaron. Consequently, Reuben and Simeon are mentioned only briefly, while the details of Levi's family are greatly expanded

Finally, this specific grouping connects back to the end of Jacob's life. Because Reuben, Simeon, and Levi received harsh criticism from their father before his death, they are presented together here to restore their standing. This placement serves as a reminder that despite past rebukes, they remain deeply important and honorable within the nation [רש״י, רשב״ם].
