Exodus 7:2Sefaria

The diplomatic and spiritual confrontation with the king of Egypt required precise preparation. To face this challenge, God established a clear division of roles between Moses and Aaron. Moses was granted a supreme status, paralleling divine authority, while Aaron served as his human messenger and spokesman.

There are different perspectives on how this communication with the king actually worked. One approach suggests that Moses spoke exclusively privately to Aaron, meaning Pharaoh never actually heard Moses's voice. In this dynamic, Moses functioned like God issuing a decree, while Aaron acted as the prophet delivering the message to the king However, many commentators reject this idea, arguing that Moses did speak directly to Pharaoh According to this primary approach, Moses delivered God's words to the king just once, speaking briefly and decisively, exactly as He had commanded. Immediately afterward, Aaron took over to expand upon the words. He delivered the broader speech, explained the concepts, and presented the message in a pleasant way so the king could properly understand it

This partnership holds deeper significance. Moses's brief directives represent the core command, much like the Written Law, while Aaron's elaborations provide the necessary explanation, similar to the Oral Law [העמק דבר]. On a spiritual level, Moses served as a conduit for divine power meant to shatter Pharaoh, who represented the ultimate evil. Moses spoke with uncompromising strength and in the holy tongue. Only after Pharaoh's defenses were cracked could Aaron step in to address him with a gentler, human approach. This teaches that when confronting profound negativity, one must first use unyielding strength before transitioning to pleasantness [חומש קה״ת].

The ultimate aim of these addresses was for Aaron to demand that Pharaoh release the Israelites [רשב״ם], ensuring that the king would eventually let them go [קאסוטו]. God made it clear to Moses that this team dynamic was not a temporary crutch until he gained confidence. Rather, Aaron would remain his spokesman permanently, right up until the mission was completed and the people were freed [העמק דבר]. Indeed, throughout the rest of the story, even when Aaron is not explicitly mentioned during visits to the palace, the two brothers always arrived and worked together as a unified team
