וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֔י בֶּן־אָדָ֕ם אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־תִּמְצָ֖א אֱכ֑וֹל אֱכוֹל֙ אֶת־הַמְּגִלָּ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את וְלֵ֥ךְ דַּבֵּ֖ר אֶל־בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Delivering a divine message is not merely a task of repeating words; it requires the messenger to be completely transformed by the vision. Before a prophet can speak to the people, the prophecy must become an inseparable part of his own soul. The initial directive to take what is presented is understood in two main ways. Some explain that it refers to the scroll held in God's hand, which is then given to the prophet [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Others suggest that the focus is on the contents of the scroll itself, requiring the prophet to fully accept everything written within it, both front and back [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל].

The instruction to eat the scroll is not a physical act, but rather a metaphor for deep learning, acceptance, and spiritual assimilation [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. This consumption represents the process of gaining wisdom and spiritual understanding [אברבנאל]. Because the scroll contains harsh prophecies and warnings of punishment, there is a risk that the prophet might carry out his mission purely out of fear. However, fulfilling a command solely out of the fear of punishment does not create a stable, lasting impression on a person's soul. Therefore, the prophet must consume the message, internalizing it until it is etched into his heart and becomes a core part of his inner being [מלבי״ם].

Only after this profound process of internalization is complete does the practical stage of the mission begin. Commentators agree that there is a strict, mandatory sequence at play. The prophet must first learn, accept, and fully absorb the divine words. Only when the message has completely saturated his being is he truly ready to step forward and deliver it to the Israelites.
