וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלַ֗י בֶּן־אָדָם֙ בִּטְנְךָ֤ תַֽאֲכֵל֙ וּמֵעֶ֣יךָ תְמַלֵּ֔א אֵ֚ת הַמְּגִלָּ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲנִ֖י נֹתֵ֣ן אֵלֶ֑יךָ וָאֹ֣כְלָ֔ה וַתְּהִ֥י בְּפִ֖י כִּדְבַ֥שׁ לְמָתֽוֹק׃ {פ}

A prophet receiving a divine message must do more than simply hear it; he must absorb it completely until it becomes an inseparable part of who he is. Even when the message carries harsh and difficult content, the prophet is commanded to take it in fully. The physical imagery of feeding the stomach and filling the intestines serves as a powerful metaphor for deep listening and total assimilation. The prophet is required to satisfy his soul with the prophetic words, holding onto them tightly in his mind so they are never forgotten, rather than rejecting or casting them out [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, the demand to fill his inner being signifies that God's word must occupy him entirely, leaving absolutely no room for foreign thoughts or worldly distractions [מלבי״ם].

Responding to this divine command, the prophet fully accepts the message, listening closely and internalizing every detail [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. What follows is a striking contrast. Although the message itself consists of bitter news and harsh prophecies of wrath, the experience of absorbing it feels as sweet as honey. This sweetness arises from the prophet's own attitude: he accepts his mission willingly, with a complete heart and genuine desire. The very knowledge that these are the words of God transforms a heavy burden into something deeply pleasant, proving that he is truly capable of carrying the weight of his calling [מלבי״ם, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

While the experience is compared to eating honey, a careful distinction is made regarding this sweetness. Because consuming too much physical honey can be harmful, the comparison focuses strictly on the pleasant, sweet quality of the honey, deliberately excluding any negative health effects that might normally come from taking in such a large amount [חומת אנך].
