Close family ties between the royal houses eventually lead to a deeply problematic alliance. Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, forms a partnership with Ahaziah, the son of Ahab and the king of Israel [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This connection is highly questionable given Ahaziah's reputation for severe corruption. The emphasis on his great wickedness serves to point out a troubling reality. Despite knowing exactly how evil the king of Israel is, Jehoshaphat does not hold back from joining forces with him [מצודת דוד].
The nature of Ahaziah's evil is particularly striking when compared to that of his father. While Ahab's sins were largely the result of being manipulated and incited by his wife, Jezebel, Ahaziah operates differently. He chooses the path of wickedness completely on his own, acting from his own personal initiative rather than outside influence [מלבי״ם].
