שמואל ב, פרק י״א, פסוק ט״ו

II Samuel 11:15Sefaria

וַיִּכְתֹּ֥ב בַּסֵּ֖פֶר לֵאמֹ֑ר הָב֣וּ אֶת־אוּרִיָּ֗ה אֶל־מוּל֙ פְּנֵ֤י הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ הַחֲזָקָ֔ה וְשַׁבְתֶּ֥ם מֵאַחֲרָ֖יו וְנִכָּ֥ה וָמֵֽת׃ {ס}

A king's desperate attempt to cover up a personal failure often leads to calculated and tragic decisions. David issues a secret command to his army's general, outlining a precise plan to ensure Uriah dies on the battlefield, thereby hiding his actions with Bathsheba. The directive places Uriah in the thick of the fiercest fighting, an area demanding immense bravery [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Since Uriah is an officer in the army, leading his troops from the front line is already expected of him [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, the fatal element of the strategy is the order for the rest of the troops to pull back. By retreating and abandoning Uriah at the front, he is left completely unprotected, guaranteeing he will be struck down by the Ammonite enemy [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The decision to orchestrate a battlefield casualty raises questions about why David avoids bringing Uriah to justice legally as a rebel against the crown. A public trial before the high court would broadcast the scandal to the nation, sparking public outrage and potentially inciting a rebellion. Consequently, David is forced to conceal his disgrace through deception [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, David does not initiate a pointless suicide mission that sacrifices innocent troops. The intense battle unfolds naturally, and any other soldiers who fall die in the ordinary course of war. Uriah's death is the direct result of the isolated command to fall back and leave him exposed [מלבי״ם].

This calculated move serves two primary objectives concerning Bathsheba. First, Uriah's death in combat allows David to marry her officially, creating the public illusion that she conceived only after their wedding [מצודת דוד]. Second, according to Jewish law, every soldier departing for war provides his wife with a conditional divorce document. Because Uriah dies in battle, Bathsheba is retroactively considered a divorced woman from the very day he left. Due to this legal mechanism, David technically avoids the severe sin of being with a married woman [רש״י].
