שמואל ב, פרק ט״ז, פסוק י״ג

II Samuel 16:13Sefaria

וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ דָּוִ֛ד וַאֲנָשָׁ֖יו בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ {ס} וְשִׁמְעִ֡י הֹלֵךְ֩ בְּצֵ֨לַע הָהָ֜ר לְעֻמָּת֗וֹ הָלוֹךְ֙ וַיְקַלֵּ֔ל וַיְסַקֵּ֤ל בָּאֲבָנִים֙ לְעֻמָּת֔וֹ וְעִפַּ֖ר בֶּעָפָֽר׃ {פ}

A king's restraint is profoundly tested during a public journey of humiliation. As the royal entourage marches, a relentless shower of curses, stones, and dirt rains down on them from above, creating a stark contrast between continuous abuse and quiet acceptance.

The physical setting highlights the dynamics of the encounter. Shimei walks along the side of the mountain, positioned opposite David [מצודת ציון]. Although Shimei actively hurls stones and dust, the vast gap between them ensures that no physical harm reaches the king or his men; the debris is merely thrown in their general direction [רד״ק]. The specific act of throwing dust is a calculated gesture meant to deeply humiliate David [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The intense phrasing used to describe this action serves either to clarify the exact nature of the throwing [מצודת ציון] or to emphasize the sheer force and aggression behind the act [רד״ק].

Beyond the physical confrontation, the scene carries an underlying layer of meaning that points to David's past. The detail that David and his men are walking on a specific path suggests they are following the course set by David's own counsel. At the same time, Shimei's position on the flank of the mountain serves as a subtle reminder of the incident involving Bathsheba and Uriah the Hittite. Through his actions and words, Shimei intentionally aims to bring this past failure to David's mind [אברבנאל].

In the face of this abuse, David's response reveals immense greatness of spirit. He neither veers off his path nor attempts to hide his face from the disgrace. Instead, he accepts the humiliation with love [מלבי״ם]. His ability to maintain complete silence and control his emotions while a wicked man curses him stands as a testament to his deep piety and upright character. Nevertheless, the grueling nature of the journey and the profound sadness brought on by Shimei's cruel words ultimately leave David and his followers completely exhausted and sorrowful [אברבנאל].
