II Samuel 16:5Sefaria

David’s painful flight reaches a profound low of isolation and rejection as he nears Bahurim. Located in the territory of the tribe of Benjamin and known in other sources as Alemet, the city serves as the backdrop for a bitter encounter David does not actually enter the city itself; he merely approaches its outskirts It is at this boundary that the king's deep loneliness becomes starkly apparent. Throughout his agonizing journey up to this point, not a single person has stepped forward to greet or comfort him. When someone finally does emerge from the city, it is not to offer solace, but to confront him with hostility [מלבי"ם].

The man who comes out, Shimei son of Gera, begins his verbal assault the very moment he leaves the city, advancing steadily toward David while hurling abuse The curses he yells are not mystical hexes, but rather intense expressions of public disgrace, shame, and humiliation [מצודת ציון].

This harsh confrontation is not a random misfortune, but a direct spiritual consequence of David's previous actions. Earlier, David had wrongly accepted slander from Ziba against Mephibosheth, a descendant of King Saul. In response, God orchestrates this painful encounter with Shimei, who is also from Saul's family. God presents David with a severe test of patience, using this intense suffering and public humiliation to atone for his earlier failure and ultimately protect him [אלשיך].
