I Chronicles 11:25Sefaria

מִן־הַשְּׁלוֹשִׁ֗ים הִנּ֤וֹ נִכְבָּד֙ ה֔וּא וְאֶל־הַשְּׁלֹשָׁ֖ה לֹא־בָ֑א וַיְשִׂימֵ֥הוּ דָוִ֖יד עַל־מִשְׁמַעְתּֽוֹ׃ {ס}

In King David's military, a unique hierarchy existed where certain warriors stood apart due to their distinct roles and levels of courage. One particular hero occupied a fascinating middle ground between two elite groups, earning a position of deep personal trust from the king.

This warrior held a status far more honored than the renowned group of thirty fighters who formed the backbone of David’s elite forces. Because of his exceptional prestige, he was not counted as a regular member of their ranks. According to [מלבי״ם], his profound honor was not solely based on military might, but also stemmed from his role as the head of the Sanhedrin, the highest judicial council. Yet, despite his immense prestige and leadership, his physical feats of combat did not quite match those of the top three senior warriors—famous for risking their lives to draw water and becoming ultimate symbols of daring bravery. Consequently, he was not included in that exclusive trio either.

Finding himself in this highly respected intermediate position, he was given a specialized and trusted assignment. David appointed him to an official command role directly overseeing the royal bodyguard, historically known as the Cherethites and Pelethites. In this capacity, he was kept personally close to the king, responsible for hearing and executing David's direct orders and managing the monarch's personal security force.
