I Kings 21:10Sefaria

Jezebel orchestrates a calculated blood libel, staging a flawless show trial to murder Naboth and seize his vineyard under the guise of legal procedure. Despite their immense power, Ahab and Jezebel could not simply execute Naboth or confiscate his land. While the people tolerated idolatry, they would not accept the blatant destruction of justice, and such an unprovoked act could spark a public rebellion. Furthermore, royal law did not allow the king to confiscate land directly; he could only take its produce for his army. Therefore, Jezebel needed a formal legal conviction for treason, since the property of anyone executed by the crown legally transfers to the king [רד״ק].

To execute this scheme, Jezebel orders that two corrupt men of the lowest social standing, who have no hope of elevating themselves, be seated opposite Naboth to testify against him [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. The primary approach among commentators is that such individuals were chosen because honest citizens would never agree to deliver false testimony in court. However, another perspective suggests that these witnesses might not have realized they were participating in a complete fabrication. Seeing the royal seal, they may have genuinely believed Naboth was guilty. Their moral corruption lay in their willingness to lie in court, claiming they heard the crime with their own ears when they were merely relying on a government document [מלבי״ם].

The false testimony they are instructed to deliver claims that Naboth blessed God and the king, using the concept of blessing as a polite euphemism for cursing [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. A question arises as to why Jezebel fabricated a charge involving both God and the king, given that cursing either one alone was sufficient to warrant the death penalty. The commentators agree that combining both accusations created a picture of severe rebellion against both heaven and earth. Jezebel wanted to maximize public outrage, ensuring the people would boil with anger and stone Naboth to death immediately, without a moment of hesitation [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ, חומת אנך]. Through this manipulation, operating under the formal authority of judges and city elders, the show trial concludes with the fatal decree to take him out and stone him, perfectly conforming to the strict demands of the law [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
