I Kings 3:7Sefaria

Stepping into the role of a leader, a new king faces the overwhelming legacy of his father and the immense weight of guiding a nation. Solomon turns to God with the deep realization that his royal position does not come from his own personal readiness. He acknowledges that his kingship rests entirely on God's kindness and the divine promise made to David. Because of this, he asks God to grant him wisdom directly, bypassing the natural preparation usually required through years of diligent study [מלבי״ם]. Recognizing the sharp contrast between his father's renowned wisdom and his own lack of experience, Solomon humbly worries that the nation might not respect him as they should [אברבנאל].

In describing his own youth and smallness, commentators offer two primary ways to understand his age and state of mind. The traditional approach takes his self-description literally. Based on a chronological calculation of David's reign, this view maintains that Solomon was exactly twelve years old when he was crowned [רש״י, רד״ק]. However, others completely reject this timeline, pointing out significant historical and logical problems. For instance, Solomon's son Rehoboam was forty-one when he later assumed the throne, which would mean Solomon fathered him at the impossible age of ten. Therefore, this alternative perspective argues that Solomon was at least twenty years old. His words are instead a profound expression of humility and self-diminishment in the face of his massive royal burdens, much like other mature figures in Scripture who are referred to as youths [אברבנאל]. It simply describes someone who lacks the necessary prior experience for leadership [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

His confession of not knowing how to properly step out and return is widely understood as an admission of his inexperience in managing public affairs and leading the nation. Adding another layer to this, the struggle is not merely about general administration or military command. It points specifically to the complex challenge of serving as a judge. Solomon feels he lacks the knowledge of how to delve deeply into complicated legal disputes and safely emerge with a fair, precise, and just ruling [אברבנאל].
