Divine providence often operates quietly behind the scenes, guiding events that appear on the surface to be pure chance. A step back in time reveals that the fateful meeting between Samuel and Saul is entirely orchestrated by God, rather than a mere coincidence. God informs Samuel of Saul's arrival exactly one day in advance. This precise timing ensures that Samuel is fully prepared to meet him at the exact appointed moment [מלבי״ם].
This prior knowledge also clarifies the chain of events surrounding the peace offering. Because Samuel knows through prophecy that an important guest is coming, he instructs the cook to set aside a special portion well before Saul arrives. When Saul finally arrives and Samuel presents this reserved portion to him in plain view of all the invited guests, the act serves as public proof that the divine prophecy has been completely fulfilled [אלשיך].
The divine revelation also details the command to anoint Saul as king, though there are different perspectives regarding God's underlying motive for this decision. One approach explains that the command is a dual response to the Israelites' current situation. God sees their practical need for a leader to manage their national affairs, and He also hears their cries of distress caused by the oppressive Philistines [מלבי״ם].
In contrast, another perspective rejects the idea that Saul is anointed to save the people from the Philistines, pointing out that God could easily rescue them through a traditional judge. According to this view, the cry that reaches God is not a cry of pain from oppression, but rather the Israelites' stubborn and harmful demand to be given a king. God commands the anointing not out of a genuine need for security, but solely to fulfill the people's negative request [אברבנאל].
