I Samuel 9:6Sefaria

A frustrating search for lost animals transforms into an opportunity for spiritual guidance. A servant suggests a practical solution to their problem, which also reveals a deep understanding of divine providence. He points out that in the nearby city of Ramah, there is a man of God, a holy prophet The servant specifically describes this individual as an honorable man whose predictions always come true.

Emphasizing the prophet's perfect accuracy was necessary because, at that time, genuine prophecy was rare. The region was filled with magicians, astrologers, and necromancers who might occasionally predict the future but frequently lied and deceived [רד״ק, אלשיך]. Furthermore, a clear divide existed among those with unique abilities. There were respectable men of God who lacked the power to reveal hidden secrets or tell the future, and there were sorcerers who could easily locate lost items, though consulting them was shameful and forbidden. By highlighting the prophet's exact accuracy and honorable status, the servant assures his master that this man combines both essential qualities. He is completely righteous, and his words are perfectly reliable, making it both practical and morally permissible to seek his counsel [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].

The stated goal of visiting the prophet is to determine the right path forward. The primary approach among commentators is that this was a straightforward, practical inquiry: they wanted to know which direction to take to find the lost donkeys and discover what had happened to the animals after such an exhausting search. However, a deeper understanding suggests that the servant recognized something highly unusual about their situation. It was unnatural for donkeys to wander across multiple borders for three entire days without anyone taking them in. Realizing this, the servant concluded that God was intentionally steering their path for a hidden reason. He hoped the prophet would reveal the true, underlying purpose of their long journey—a journey that was ultimately guiding them toward kingship [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].
