ישעיהו, פרק י״ט, פסוק כ״ג

Isaiah 19:23Sefaria

בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא תִּהְיֶ֨ה מְסִלָּ֤ה מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ אַשּׁ֔וּרָה וּבָא־אַשּׁ֥וּר בְּמִצְרַ֖יִם וּמִצְרַ֣יִם בְּאַשּׁ֑וּר וְעָבְד֥וּ מִצְרַ֖יִם אֶת־אַשּֽׁוּר׃ {ס}

In a time of profound spiritual and political shift, two great rival empires lay down their weapons to forge a new bond. Past hostility gives way to mutual recognition, lasting peace, and open borders. A clear, paved highway will be established to ensure constant and easy travel between the two lands [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ], leading directly toward Assyria [אבן עזרא]. This road represents far more than physical infrastructure. It is the ultimate expression of peace, love, and brotherhood between peoples who once constantly provoked and battled each other [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד]. Because of this newly established peace, the citizens of both nations will frequently travel back and forth to visit one another.

Looking at these events through a historical lens, this era of peace may align with the period of the kings following the reign of Alexander the Great. During this time, the mutual travel between the empires took the form of royal marriages, arranged to solidify alliances during reprieves from war [שד״ל].

As the relationship between Egypt and Assyria evolves, their dynamic shifts, leading to different interpretations of their future roles. One approach understands this change as a literal political submission, where the Egyptians will become subordinate and serve the Assyrian king [אבן עזרא, שד״ל, מלבי״ם].

Conversely, another perspective suggests that this service is not about political dominance, but rather a shared religious devotion. Instead of Egypt serving Assyria, the two nations will stand side by side to serve God together, bringing sacrifices and offerings in unison. This shared spiritual awakening stems from a miraculous event. The survivors of a devastating plague in the Assyrian camp will witness God's wonders and recognize His absolute greatness. The Egyptians will experience a similar realization, ultimately leading both nations to serve God together in genuine closeness and brotherhood [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].
