אָבְלָ֤ה נָֽבְלָה֙ הָאָ֔רֶץ אֻמְלְלָ֥ה נָבְלָ֖ה תֵּבֵ֑ל אֻמְלָ֖לוּ מְר֥וֹם עַם־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

A sweeping prophecy of ruin unfolds in stages, capturing a total collapse of society and nature. Historically, this devastation is linked to the King of Assyria, who wiped out numerous kingdoms [אבן עזרא]. Some identify this specifically as the military campaign of Sennacherib, whose conquest struck the Land of Israel in deliberate, crushing waves [מלבי״ם].

The ruin begins in the open country and unpopulated farming regions [מלבי״ם]. Two distinct types of devastation strike these areas. First is a profound state of mourning and physical destruction [רד״ק, מצודת ציון]. The earth takes on the appearance of a grieving person [שד״ל], reflecting an external emptiness marked by completely abandoned roads with no travelers in sight [מלבי״ם]. Following this outward desolation comes a withering, much like a leaf that weakens and drops from its branch [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת ציון, שד״ל]. This represents a deep internal failure where the soil loses its natural strength, yielding only thorns instead of crops [מלבי״ם]. The pairing of these two strikes emphasizes the sheer intensity of the ruin [רד״ק].

From the open fields, the destruction moves inward to the populated regions [מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. There are different views on exactly which inhabited area is targeted. One approach suggests it is the Land of Israel, considered the primary land and enriched by many commandments [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. Another perspective argues that the prophecy points to the kingdom of Babylon, utilizing specific sounds to create a poetic rhythm with the surrounding events [שד״ל]. Wherever the location, the populated areas suffer the same internal withering as the fields, but they are also struck by a sudden, crushing lowliness [רש״י, מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ]. While the withering is a slow internal decay, this new blow is a sudden weakness crashing down from above, similar to a mighty warrior having his strength instantly cut away [מלבי״ם].

Finally, after the chaos shatters the general population [שטיינזלץ], the destruction reaches the very top of society. It strikes the most honored, proud, and elevated members of the nation, including the great leaders, royal ministers, and those in high positions of power [רש״י, אבן עזרא, רד״ק, שד״ל, שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, even this highest layer of leadership is entirely cut down and lost.
