ישעיהו, פרק כ״ד, פסוק ז׳

Isaiah 24:7Sefaria

אָבַ֥ל תִּיר֖וֹשׁ אֻמְלְלָה־גָ֑פֶן נֶאֶנְח֖וּ כׇּל־שִׂמְחֵי־לֵֽב׃

The destruction and desolation of a land are often most visible in the sudden end of its agricultural harvest. This total loss of produce directly darkens the social mood and serves as a powerful metaphor for a nation falling to its enemies [שד״ל]. On a practical level, the ruin of the vineyards and the loss of the grapes happen simply because there are no farmers left to prune and care for the land. The primary approach among commentators views this agricultural collapse as a state of complete devastation and loss.

Beyond the physical ruin, a rich poetic personification illustrates this lack of growth. The vine and the wine are described as if they are grieving over their own empty branches [שד״ל]. Taking this imagery further, the wine is pictured as the child of the vine. As the vine withers and dies, the wine mourns for its source, much like a son weeping over the loss of his father [מלבי״ם].

This agricultural tragedy deeply affects the people. Those who are usually happy and accustomed to drinking wine are left sighing. Because wine naturally brings cheer to the human heart, its disappearance causes joy to be replaced by deep sadness. Expanding on the earlier poetic imagery, since the wine itself is trapped in a state of mourning, it no longer holds the power to bring happiness to others [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, this relationship can be seen as a tragic, two-way cycle. The widespread sadness and loss of social connection within the people are what initially cause them to stop drinking and abandon their agricultural work, which in turn leaves the vineyards completely desolate [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
