Divine forgiveness operates much like the clearing of an overcast sky. When people commit wrongs, their actions create a barrier between themselves and God, acting exactly like clouds that darken the sky and block out the sun's rays [מלבי״ם]. Yet, these barriers are entirely temporary. God promises to completely erase these wrongdoings [מצודת ציון]. The removal of this barrier is absolute, whether the sins are scattered by the wind [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ], melted away into falling rain [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, צאינה וראינה], or simply vanish the moment the sun emerges [אבן עזרא].
While the imagery of different types of clouds is generally understood as a poetic repetition, it also reflects the varying weights of human mistakes. A thick, dark cloud represents severe, intentional acts of rebellion that completely block out the spiritual light. In contrast, a regular, lighter cloud represents accidental mistakes, which do not darken the sky to the same degree [מלבי״ם]. Regardless of the severity, this total forgiveness is not a new phenomenon. It is a continuous kindness from God that has accompanied the Israelites ever since their early failures in Egypt and the wilderness [רש״י].
Beyond the physical picture of weather, the choice of a cloud carries a deeper philosophical message. Clouds are entirely independent of the stars and constellations. By comparing sins to clouds, God demonstrates that the people are not bound by astrological forces, nor are they doomed by their physical location to continue making poor choices [אהבת יהונתן].
Once this barrier is cleared away, God calls for the people to return to Him. This invitation proves that a person is never permanently trapped by their past mistakes [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, returning is a necessary condition. God urges the people to repent, promising that the moment they do, their redemption is already prepared and waiting for them [מלבי״ם, צאינה וראינה]. Ultimately, this promise points forward to the future rescue from the Babylonian exile [רד״ק]. By returning to the Land of Israel, the people will finally be free from those negative astrological influences forever [אהבת יהונתן].
