Joshua 7:12Sefaria

A sudden, crushing military defeat is rarely just a matter of poor tactics on the battlefield. For the Israelites, the collapse of their strength and their sudden vulnerability stem directly from a deep spiritual fracture within the camp. The presence of forbidden plunder has transformed the entire nation into a cursed entity, triggering a catastrophic twofold crisis: the draining of their natural military resilience and the complete withdrawal of God's protective presence.

Their sudden inability to stand their ground in combat reflects a total loss of capacity to wage war [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This profound weakness operates on two distinct levels. On a natural, physical level, the army turns its back and flees because the mere presence of the forbidden items casts a shadow over their strength, sapping their power [מלבי״ם]. The entire nation has effectively become a curse [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This collective guilt falls upon the whole community because the people turned a blind eye to one another. By failing to hold each other accountable, they indirectly enabled the individual who violated the command [מצודת דוד].

On a higher, providential level, this spiritual breach causes God to remove His presence, declaring that He will no longer remain with them. Repairing this devastating situation requires a two-part solution. Simply removing the stolen objects from the camp is sufficient to lift the physical curse and restore the army's natural bravery. However, regaining God's providence demands a much harsher response [מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators is that the final demand to destroy the curse does not refer merely to the stolen objects. Rather, it points directly to the person who committed the crime. The curse has attached itself to this individual, and restoring the relationship with God requires that the transgressor be completely wiped off the face of the earth.
