וַיִּקָּחוּם֙ מִתּ֣וֹךְ הָאֹ֔הֶל וַיְבִאוּם֙ אֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ וְאֶ֖ל כׇּל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיַּצִּקֻ֖ם לִפְנֵ֥י יְהֹוָֽה׃

Bringing stolen goods out of the dark and into the public eye transforms a private sin into a direct confrontation with God. When the hidden loot is retrieved from the tent, the physical evidence of the crime is presented to the entire nation. Because the gold was wrapped inside a garment and the silver coins were concealed beneath it, the bundle is unpacked, and the contents are poured out and scattered across the ground [מצודת ציון, רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another approach suggests that rather than being scattered, the objects are deliberately set up and positioned in a highly visible, prominent manner [רלב״ג, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Whether scattered or firmly placed, this public exhibition before God and the Ark of the Covenant serves a vital educational purpose. First and foremost, presenting the stolen goods proves to the people that these are the exact items the thief confessed to taking, verifying his guilt beyond any doubt [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, the dramatic presentation is meant to instill a deep, lasting respect for consecrated property. By seeing the forbidden items laid bare, the Israelites receive a tangible warning about the destructive consequences of greed and theft [רד״ק].

Beyond the practical display, there is a profound emotional weight to the moment. The act of placing the items on the ground is also understood as a forceful, anguished throwing of the objects before God. Overwhelmed by grief, Joshua smashes the loot against the earth and cries out to heaven with a desperate plea. He asks God how it is possible that for the sake of these mere material possessions, such great and important leaders of Israel had to die in battle [רש״י, רד״ק].
