יהושע, פרק ז׳, פסוק ח׳

Joshua 7:8Sefaria

Following the shocking defeat at Ai, Joshua turns to God in a state of emotional turmoil, blending desperate pleas, deep personal pain, and severe national concern. He approaches God with a tone of begging and intense supplication [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In his prayer, Joshua attempts to apologize for the harsh words he had previously directed toward Him. He recognizes the sharpness of his tone but explains that his reaction was driven by overwhelming heartache. Relying on the principle that a person is not held strictly accountable for words spoken in the depths of grief, he explains that his cry burst forth uncontrollably. Faced with such a devastating loss, he feels there was simply nothing else he could say [מצודת דוד, חומת אנך].

By specifically referring to the nation as Israel rather than just the people, Joshua emphasizes their great importance and elevated spiritual status as a nation filled with Torah and Commandments [חומת אנך].

The pain of this event extends far beyond the humiliation of the retreat itself, where the Israelites turned their backs and fled from their enemies [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Joshua identifies a severe strategic crisis. Until this defeat, a deep fear of the Israelites had gripped the inhabitants of the land. This fear alone would have guaranteed easy victories through natural military means, even without open miracles from God. However, because of their public retreat, that protective fear has completely evaporated. Joshua expresses profound concern that their enemies will now be emboldened, gather their strength, and unite to wage war against them [מלבי״ם].
