Judges 4:15Sefaria

A dramatic shift occurs on the battlefield as Divine intervention shatters a formidable Canaanite army, reducing its feared commander to a desperate man running for his life. God orchestrates deep panic, fear, and confusion within the enemy camp This Divine intervention strikes before the Israelite forces even reach the scene. God causes the Canaanites to hear the terrifying sounds of a massive approaching army, and perhaps even shows them visions of fiery horses and chariots, sending them into a panicked retreat [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם].

Only after this initial chaos do Barak and his men arrive to strike the terrified enemy with the sharp edge of the sword This sequence not only highlights the preemptive victory orchestrated by God, but it also reveals a profound psychological transformation in the Israelite leader. Witnessing such miraculous success fills Barak with the courage and confidence needed to bravely pursue a massive army with just a small group of men. This newfound bravery stands in sharp contrast to his earlier insecurity, when he insisted that Deborah accompany him to the battle [אברבנאל].

At the height of the defeat, the Canaanite general Sisera abandons his chariot to flee on foot. With his entire army running away, remaining in the chariot becomes a deadly trap rather than a tactical advantage. It offers him no real protection, and the physical act of driving makes it nearly impossible for him to defend himself [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Driven by pure self-preservation, Sisera leaves behind his ultimate symbol of power. By escaping on foot, he hopes to blend into the surroundings and look like an ordinary soldier, ensuring that the pursuing Israelites will not recognize and capture him
