Proverbs 6:19Sefaria

יָפִ֣יחַ כְּ֭זָבִים עֵ֣ד שָׁ֑קֶר וּמְשַׁלֵּ֥חַ מְ֝דָנִ֗ים בֵּ֣ין אַחִֽים׃ {פ}

The destructive power of negative speech often begins with simple lies and intensifies until it creates deep, irreversible fractures within society. King Solomon outlines a progression of harmful behavior that culminates in the most severe offenses related to deceit and conflict.

A major aspect of this progression is the act of giving false testimony. The primary approach among commentators views this deceit simply as an act of speech, an expulsion of air used to spread lies [רש״י, מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא]. However, another perspective connects the act of lying to the setting of a trap. A liar inevitably finds himself forced to invent an interlocking web of fabrications to cover up his previous untruths. In this context, a distinction is drawn between a standard lie, which describes a possible event that simply did not occur, and a complete falsehood, which presents an absolute impossibility [אלשיך].

The exact nature of this deceit is understood in several ways. Some interpret it as perjury in a court of law [מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא]. This legal deceit harms innocent people and actively distances the liar from God, as He is the ultimate source of truth [עמנואל הרומי]. Others suggest the false testimony relates to matters of faith rather than legal disputes [מלבי״ם]. On a more philosophical level, the false witness represents anyone who uses deception and flawed premises to manipulate listeners into reaching incorrect conclusions [עמנואל הרומי].

The climax of these destructive behaviors is the act of sowing discord among brothers, identified as the seventh and most severe abomination in this series. The concept of brotherhood extends far beyond blood relatives to include close friends and loved ones [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This refers to the gossiper who secretly passes information from one person to another, deliberately sparking hatred and conflict. Even though the damage is inflicted solely through words rather than physical violence, it is classified as a direct and tangible act of harm [עמנואל הרומי]. The severity of such gossip and division is so absolute that it deals a fatal blow to three individuals simultaneously: the person speaking the malicious words, the person listening to them, and the person being spoken about [אלשיך, מצודת דוד].
