Proverbs 6:18Sefaria

לֵ֗ב חֹ֭רֵשׁ מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת אָ֑וֶן רַגְלַ֥יִם מְ֝מַהֲר֗וֹת לָר֥וּץ לָרָעָֽה׃

The descent into sin is rarely a sudden event. It is a calculated process that begins quietly within the mind and eventually erupts into hasty physical action. This progression highlights a profound tragedy: human beings taking the highest, most refined abilities granted to them by God and twisting them to cause destruction and deceit.

As part of a broader list of traits that are hateful to God, this process is mapped out physically from top to bottom, moving from the highest organ down to the lowest—from the heart to the feet [רלב״ג]. This downward trajectory mirrors earlier descriptions of a wicked individual who quietly plots evil and signals his intentions with his physical movements [מלבי״ם].

The process starts internally, with a mind that actively plans lies, fraud, and harm against others [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד]. There is a deep distortion in this act. The heart, serving as the center of human intellect and understanding, was designed to elevate humanity above the animal kingdom and act as a vehicle for achieving personal perfection. Directing this intellect toward evil is particularly repulsive because it directly violates the very purpose for which God created the human mind. It takes an instrument meant for greatness and reduces it to a tool of disgrace [עמנואל הרומי, רלב״ג].

A dark thought does not simply vanish into a vacuum. Even if it is not executed right away, it inevitably triggers the next phase of the downward spiral [אלשיך]. This subsequent stage is characterized by a rapid physical mobilization to carry out the offense, such as spreading lies, testifying falsely, and stirring up conflict among brothers [רלב״ג]. The sheer speed of this reaction is intentional. A wicked person rushes to complete his scheme as quickly as possible to prevent any moment of hesitation, ensuring he does not have the time to regret his plan or back out [מצודת דוד].

While this rapid movement is often understood physically, an alternative approach views this final stage not as the action of a specific body part, but as a broader representation of cause and effect. Under this interpretation, the focus is not on physical running, but rather on a person who actively initiates circumstances and creates situations that bring harm and ruin to himself and everyone around him [עמנואל הרומי].
