Proverbs 6:33Sefaria

Addiction to physical desires, particularly the sin of adultery, carries devastating consequences that echo across a person's physical, social, and spiritual life. The primary approach among commentators highlights a sharp contrast between theft and marital betrayal. A thief often steals out of desperation and can eventually make things right by paying a fine, thereby erasing the associated shame. An adulterer, however, inflicts irreversible damage upon himself

The resulting punishment manifests in severe ways, though commentators differ on its exact nature. One perspective views the affliction as a direct divine punishment, where God brings about diseases as a specific response to sexual immorality, much like the plagues brought upon Pharaoh Another approach understands this as a harsh earthly consequence. In this view, the adulterer suffers brutal beatings and physical wounds at the hands of a jealous husband or the woman's family, who will show absolutely no mercy

Beyond the physical pain, the individual faces profound social humiliation and a complete loss of dignity This disgrace becomes public knowledge, reducing the person to a despised and lowly state in the eyes of society Even after enduring the physical blows, the social stigma remains firmly attached [עמנואל הרומי].

Ultimately, the shame of this act is permanent and will never be forgotten The damage creates an eternal family stain that cannot be washed away, especially if a child is born from the affair, resulting in a distortion that can never be corrected. Spiritually, the sin generates an accusing force against the person that, unlike the sin of theft, cannot simply be paid off or canceled with money [אלשיך].

On a deeper psychological level, this reflects the tragic condition of someone who completely surrenders to his darkest impulses. Such a person loses all control over his life, refuses to listen to his better judgment, and stubbornly continues to destroy his own soul rather than choosing the path of God's commandments [אמרי דעת].
