Deuteronomy 33:29Sefaria

אַשְׁרֶ֨יךָ*(בספרי תימן אַשְׁרֶ֨יךָ באל״ף גדולה) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל מִ֣י כָמ֗וֹךָ עַ֚ם נוֹשַׁ֣ע בַּֽיהֹוָ֔ה מָגֵ֣ן עֶזְרֶ֔ךָ וַאֲשֶׁר־חֶ֖רֶב גַּאֲוָתֶ֑ךָ וְיִכָּחֲשׁ֤וּ אֹיְבֶ֙יךָ֙ לָ֔ךְ וְאַתָּ֖ה עַל־בָּמוֹתֵ֥ימוֹ תִדְרֹֽךְ׃ {ס}

Moses concludes his final blessings to the Israelites by summarizing their ultimate destiny. After detailing the material prosperity destined for each tribe, he clarifies that their true, complete success is not merely a matter of physical abundance. Rather, it flows from a unique and direct relationship with the Creator, guaranteeing an eternal happiness that is unparalleled among the nations This recognition of their divine purpose stands entirely independent of the opinions or actions of the rest of the world [חומש קה״ת].

Unlike other nations, whose fates are governed by natural systems, astrology, or celestial forces, the salvation of the Israelites comes directly from God's glory through miraculous intervention Their deliverance is absolutely dependent upon and bound to the Creator Himself This unique relationship manifests throughout history, from the miraculous collapse of Jericho's walls [אלשיך] to the promise of an eternal redemption in the Messianic era, after which there will be no further subjugation [רבנו בחיי, פני דוד].

God's protection operates in two complementary dimensions. First, He acts as a shield, guarding the nation from harm, absorbing the arrows of their enemies, and ensuring their survival throughout the long years of exile At the same time, God serves as the sword through which the Israelites conquer and rise above their adversaries While typical warriors take pride in their physical weaponry, the Israelites understand that their true weapon is Divine Providence. The bearing of physical arms is merely an outward symbol of sovereignty, for God is the actual power elevating them These dual symbols of defense and offense also evoke the merit of the forefathers, with the shield representing Abraham and the sword representing Isaac [העמק דבר]. Furthermore, this majestic sword is seen as a spiritual crown of victory, symbolized by the wearing of phylacteries [צפנת פענח].

Regarding the fate of those who oppose them, the primary approach among commentators is that the enemies will ultimately submit, masking their hatred and flattering the Israelites out of profound fear. This mirrors the historical deception of the Gibeonites during the time of Joshua, who feigned friendship to survive. However, some dispute this interpretation, arguing that false flattery and suppressed hatred hardly constitute a blessing. Instead, they understand this as a promise of the enemies' absolute weakness; their power will evaporate, and their pathetic state will starkly contradict their once mighty past [שד״ל]. To address the lingering danger of hypocritical adversaries harboring hidden malice, God assures a supreme layer of protection against even concealed threats [חתם סופר].

The culmination of this divine promise is a vision of absolute triumph, where the Israelites will tread upon the heights of their foes. This represents a literal physical victory, fulfilled historically when Joshua commanded his military leaders to place their feet upon the necks of defeated kings Yet beyond military dominance, this treading symbolizes the nation ascending to the pinnacles of achievement that other empires strove for but failed to reach [רש״ר הירש]. Ultimately, it points to a future era when the nations of the world will recognize the divine destiny of the Israelites and join them in the spiritual repair of the world
