Exodus 23:25Sefaria

וַעֲבַדְתֶּ֗ם אֵ֚ת יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם וּבֵרַ֥ךְ אֶֽת־לַחְמְךָ֖ וְאֶת־מֵימֶ֑יךָ וַהֲסִרֹתִ֥י מַחֲלָ֖ה מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃ {ס}

A fundamental clash exists between faith in God and the practices of ancient pagan cultures. While idolaters worshipped the forces of nature, the sun, and astrological signs in hopes of securing agricultural and economic prosperity, true material abundance and robust health stem solely from a deep devotion to God. He alone actively manages and overrides the systems of nature and astrology This devotion takes several forms. It can be understood as the physical service performed at the altar [העמק דבר], the obligation of daily prayer [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם], or more broadly, the fulfillment of all Commandments and the study of Torah, which together grant a person inner resilience [אבן עזרא, צאינה וראינה].

The call to serve God is presented as a collective duty, while the subsequent promise of sustenance is directed to the individual. The primary approach among commentators is that spiritual devotion and prayer are most desired and impactful when performed with public unity and mutual responsibility. However, the resulting reward and blessing are granted to each person individually, carefully tailored to their specific situation, personal intentions, and level of effort Alternatively, this dynamic between collective duty and individual reward is seen by some simply as a common stylistic and poetic feature found throughout biblical literature [קאסוטו].

The promise of blessed sustenance encompasses all types of food and drink [רמב״ן, חזקוני]. This blessing manifests not only as physical abundance but also in the quality of the nourishment. Even a small portion of food will fully satisfy and sustain a person [שפתי כהן], provided the sustenance was acquired honestly and without theft [אלשיך]. Securing this divine blessing also requires human action. A deeper reading suggests an active obligation for a person to recite a blessing over their food before eating. By doing so, they earn the right to consume it, because without a blessing, all sustenance ultimately belongs to God

Following the promise of nourishment is a guarantee that illness will be removed, emphasizing God's direct, personal intervention to step beyond the ordinary laws of nature The connection between blessed food and the prevention of illness is deeply practical. In the natural course of life, an abundance of wealth and physical indulgence can easily lead to sickness. However, divine blessing ensures that the consumed food will not create harmful excesses in the body. Instead, the food and drink themselves are transformed into a healing medicine Additionally, since contaminated water is a primary source of disease, the specific blessing upon water directly prevents such ailments

Illness generally stems from two main sources: internal factors like a poor diet, and external factors such as climate changes or astrological influences. Devotion to God elevates a person entirely above these natural and astrological limitations, providing a natural physical resilience that renders doctors unnecessary This guarantee of health is essential, as material wealth completely loses its value if a person is too sick to enjoy it Beyond physical restoration, this promise contains a profound spiritual dimension. Serving God heals the soul from its internal ailments, whether those spiritual sicknesses were caused by stumbling into forbidden desires or by sinking too deeply into permitted material pleasures [חומש קה״ת].
