Ezekiel 3:18Sefaria

The heavy responsibility resting on the shoulders of a spiritual leader goes far beyond simply knowing the truth; it requires an uncompromising commitment to speak it aloud. Standing by in silence is never a neutral act, but rather a fatal failure. When God determines a severe judgment for a wrongdoer, He delivers this message to the prophet so that the prophet can serve as His voice This duty is deeply personal. A leader is expected to warn not just the general public, but to approach each individual directly and specifically [חומת אנך].

The purpose of confronting the wrongdoer—whether by announcing the impending judgment or through rational explanation—is to guide them away from a destructive path that has come to define them, just as a good path defines a righteous person [מלבי״ם, רד״ק]. The ultimate goal of this intervention is to save the person's life in this world or to prevent their spiritual death in the world to come [רד״ק]. A prophet might naturally hesitate, assuming there is no point in warning someone who sins intentionally and with contempt, believing the person will not listen anyway. The prophet might even think it is better to leave the wrongdoer in a state of ignorance rather than turning them into a conscious rebel. However, this mindset is entirely rejected. The obligation to deliver the warning remains absolute in every situation [מלבי״ם].

If the prophet chooses to remain silent, the results are devastating. The wrongdoer will still face the ultimate penalty for their actions. They are not excused simply because they were not warned, as they already know internally that their actions are wrong [רד״ק]. At the same time, the blame for that lost life falls heavily on the prophet. God will demand a strict reckoning and exact a punishment from the leader [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that the prophet is punished for failing the wrongdoer's soul, because there is always a chance that a sincere warning could have sparked repentance and saved the person Because God explicitly commanded the prophet to speak in His name, choosing silence makes the prophet directly responsible for the tragedy [רד״ק, שטיינזלץ].
