פרשת ויחי

Genesis 50:13Sefaria

Jacob's final journey back to his ancestral homeland is a powerful display of honor, historical closure, and meticulous planning. His sons personally carried his coffin on their shoulders, ensuring that no strangers touched it [ביאור יש״ר]. Carrying the dead on the shoulder is considered the most respectful method, whereas transporting a body using horses is viewed as a form of punishment [פרדס יוסף].

Jacob explicitly commanded that only his direct sons bear his bed, strictly excluding the Egyptians and even his own grandsons. The grandsons were kept away because their mothers were Canaanite [רש״י]. This raises questions about why the tribal patriarchs married Canaanite women despite the warnings of their ancestors. Some explain that the term "Canaanite" simply referred to a merchant's wife rather than an ethnicity. Others suggest the brothers initially married their twin sisters, and only after they died did they take Canaanite wives. Another perspective is that Judah's royal status made him unafraid to take a Canaanite wife [ריב״א, הדר זקנים, חזקוני]. To maintain peace and prevent jealousy, even Simeon's sons, who did not have a Canaanite mother, were not given special carrying privileges over the other grandsons [ריב״א, הדר זקנים, חזקוני].

The arrangement of the sons was highly precise, with three carriers assigned to each of the four sides of the bier. This exact formation foreshadowed how the Israelite tribes would eventually camp around the Tabernacle in the wilderness [רש״י]. Two sons, however, did not carry the bier: Levi, whose descendants were destined to carry the sacred Ark of the Covenant, and Joseph, who was exempt due to his royal position. In their place stepped Joseph's sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. Their participation was justified because they had been elevated to the status of full tribes and because their mother, Asenath, was actually the daughter of Dinah, rather than an Egyptian or Canaanite [רש״י, חזקוני, ברכת אשר על התורה]. Since Levi was exempt from carrying the dead due to his tribe's future role, an apparent contradiction arises regarding how Moses, a Levite, later transported Joseph's remains. Commentators clarify that Moses merely led the procession, or that Joseph's coffin miraculously carried itself [ריב״א, חזקוני].

Upon reaching the Cave of Machpelah, a sudden conflict erupted. Esau arrived and blocked the burial, arguing that Jacob had already used his allotted space by burying Leah, and the final spot belonged to him. The brothers countered that Jacob had purchased Esau's birthright, but Esau demanded physical proof of the sale. Naphtali, known for his incredible speed, was immediately dispatched back to Egypt to retrieve the deed. Meanwhile, Dan's son Chushim, who was hard of hearing, inquired about the delay. Upon realizing that Esau was dishonoring his grandfather and halting the burial, Chushim struck Esau on the head with a club, killing him. This dramatic event fulfilled Rebekah's ancient prophecy that she would lose both of her sons on the exact same day [חומש קה״ת].

The historical detail that Abraham originally purchased the field as a burial estate carries deep significance. It underscores that laying a loved one to rest in a legally acquired, respectable location is not merely an act of peace and honor for the deceased. It also reflects profound dignity upon the living—the devoted sons who successfully brought their father to his eternal rest in such a magnificent estate [העמק דבר].
