שמואל ב, פרק י״ד, פסוק כ״ז

II Samuel 14:27Sefaria

וַיִּוָּלְד֤וּ לְאַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ שְׁלוֹשָׁ֣ה בָנִ֔ים וּבַ֥ת אַחַ֖ת וּשְׁמָ֣הּ תָּמָ֑ר הִ֣יא הָֽיְתָ֔ה אִשָּׁ֖ה יְפַ֥ת מַרְאֶֽה׃ {פ}

The details of Absalom's family offer a window into his future motives and the deep, painful distance between him and his father. The birth of his three sons actually carries a hidden tragedy, as all three died during this period. This heartbreaking loss explains a later event where Absalom builds a monument for himself, claiming he has no son to keep his memory alive. It was precisely this lack of an heir that fueled his ambition to rebel and seize the royal throne, hoping to secure a lasting legacy for himself [מלבי״ם].

The presence of these children also highlights the extreme nature of David's rejection. It is natural for grandparents to feel a deep bond and longing for their grandchildren, often even more than for their own children. This is especially true when dealing with delightful children and a beautiful granddaughter. Yet, despite Absalom having these children, David maintained his strict refusal and would not agree to see him [אברבנאל].

Absalom also had a single daughter, whom he named Tamar. He clearly named her after his sister, reflecting the unique and profound bond they shared, particularly since the ultimate fate of his sister Tamar remains unknown [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Like her namesake, this daughter grew up to be a woman of exceptional beauty.
