In the midst of his flight, David crosses the summit of the Mount of Olives [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל] and continues his journey toward the desert [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. At this critical juncture, he is met by Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, who arrives with a generous supply of provisions for the road.

Ziba brings a pair of donkeys, specifically harnessed to walk side by side [מצודת ציון]. The animals are already saddled and fully prepared for riding [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They carry a heavy load of supplies, including two hundred loaves of bread [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ] and a large container of wine, which is understood to be either a leather skin [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ] or an earthenware jug [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A significant portion of the supplies consists of dried fruits. The primary approach among commentators is that these provisions include bundles of dried grapes alongside a summer fruit identified as dried figs. These figs are prepared by pressing a large quantity together until they form a solid mass resembling a loaf of bread [רד״ק]. Ziba brings a substantial amount of these figs, totaling one hundred portions or pounds [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת ציון]. They receive their name because it is customary to dry them during the warm summer months [רלב״ג]. Conversely, another perspective reverses these definitions entirely. According to this view, the bundles actually consist of the pressed dried figs, while the summer fruit represents the dried grapes, which earn their name from the season in which they are dried [אברבנאל].
