שמואל ב, פרק ט״ו, פסוק ל״ז

II Samuel 15:37Sefaria

וַיָּבֹ֥א חוּשַׁ֛י רֵעֶ֥ה דָוִ֖ד הָעִ֑יר וְאַ֨בְשָׁל֔וֹם יָב֖וֹא יְרֽוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃ {ס}

At this critical stage of the rebellion, the physical positions of the key figures highlight the urgency of the moment. David had barely left the capital city, whereas Absalom had already traveled over thirty kilometers from Hebron. Along the way, Absalom managed to gather an army and organize his forces as he marched toward Jerusalem [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Central to these unfolding events is Hushai, who served as a close companion, a devoted ally, and a trusted advisor. He earned this deep level of trust by being a constant presence in David's life, always remaining by his side and sitting in his company [מצודת ציון, רד״ק].

The sequence of events points to a very precise and dramatic timing. The primary approach among commentators is that there is a direct overlap in the timeline. At the exact moment Hushai arrived in the city, Absalom also made his entrance into Jerusalem [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. However, another perspective suggests a slightly different timeline based on the future-oriented phrasing of the action. In this view, Absalom had not yet physically arrived in the city at that exact moment. Instead, the timing indicates the moment he firmly set his heart and finalized his decision to march on Jerusalem [רש״י].
