When given the ultimate choice by God, King Solomon prefers spiritual and intellectual understanding over material success [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. God's deep satisfaction with this decision might initially seem puzzling. After all, acquiring true wisdom naturally brings along wealth, honor, a long life, and victory over enemies. Selecting wisdom is much like choosing a sacred scroll that happens to have a precious gem attached to it—the person ultimately gains both. Why, then, did this request find such immense favor in His eyes?
The answer lies in the pure intention behind the choice. Driven by an intense desire for understanding, Solomon did not give a single thought to the material benefits that naturally accompany it. His sole focus was to gain the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, allowing him to judge the people fairly. He wanted this ability so deeply that he would have chosen it even if it guaranteed a life of poverty and a short lifespan.
Often, someone who asks for wisdom simply to achieve honor or wealth is, in reality, only asking for wealth. Solomon stood apart because he sought wisdom purely for its own sake, completely free of any personal agenda or hidden motive. He desired nothing but the wisdom itself, and it was this profound sincerity that made his request so pleasing to God [מלבי״ם].
