As he awakens from his sleep [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ], the nature of his experience becomes clear. During the night, the encounter felt so profound and real that Solomon believed he was fully awake. It was only when he opened his eyes that he realized he had experienced a prophetic vision [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. Yet, the prophetic dream remained perfectly intact and clear in his mind. He did not forget a single detail, which proved its authenticity and showed that it had not been interrupted or clouded by any ordinary dreams [אברבנאל].
How did Solomon know that the dream had actually materialized? The primary approach among commentators is that he experienced an immediate transformation the moment he woke up. Hearing the everyday sounds of animals around him, such as a chirping bird or a barking dog, he suddenly found that he could understand their language.
