On their journey to seek guidance, Saul and his servant walk up the path leading into the city [מצודת דוד]. In those days, cities were typically built on hills for security and defense, meaning the local water springs were usually located down at the foot of the hill [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Furthermore, the prophet Samuel himself lived in a high place [אברבנאל]. As the two men make their ascent, they encounter young women coming out to draw water from the spring.

Walking side by side, Saul and his servant approach the young women together to ask if the seer is currently in town [אלשיך]. They ask this out of genuine uncertainty, unsure if they have reached the correct city or if the prophet might be away traveling [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Although the two men ask the question together, the young women direct their response primarily to Saul. Their answer is unusually long and detailed, driven by a simple human reason: they are struck by the young Saul's handsome appearance and want to prolong the conversation just to keep looking at him [אברבנאל, אלשיך].

Beneath this ordinary daily interaction lies a precise layer of divine providence. Meeting young women drawing water just before entering a city is a traditional heavenly sign of future success, echoing the early experiences of great leaders like Eliezer, Jacob, and Moses [אלשיך]. More importantly, the natural delay caused by the lengthy conversation is entirely orchestrated by God. God had previously told Samuel the exact time Saul would arrive. By arranging this specific encounter and the drawn-out response, God ensures that Saul is delayed just enough to meet the prophet at the precise appointed moment, without being early or late [מלבי״ם].
