At a festive sacrificial feast, an unknown guest from the tribe of Benjamin suddenly finds himself at the center of attention. He is treated with a level of respect usually reserved for the most distinguished figures, offering early hints of his future royal destiny. When the cook serves the meal to Saul, he presents the food with raised hands, a traditional gesture of respect for important individuals, carefully separating it from the rest of the feast [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The specific cut presented is the thigh and the upper leg attached to it [רש״י, מצודת ציון, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Some commentators identify these as the absolute finest cuts of the animal, such as the fat tail or the breast [רד״ק, אלשיך]. Typically, these premium pieces are reserved exclusively for the priests or the person leading the blessing over the sacrifice, but they are now served to Saul as a unique mark of honor [מלבי״ם, רש״י].

Samuel addresses Saul to ensure he understands the significance of the gesture. He clarifies that the food before him is not a leftover from the other guests. On the contrary, it is a choice portion that was deliberately set aside and hidden in advance specifically for him [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Receiving the finest cuts serves as undeniable proof to Saul that he is the true guest of honor [אלשיך]. Because the cut of meat is quite large and not customarily eaten by one person, Samuel encourages Saul to cut and arrange the portion before him so he can share it with his servant or the other seated guests [אלשיך, רלב״ג].

Samuel explains that the meal was prepared ahead of time and carefully guarded for the exact moment of Saul's arrival [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He reveals that when he initially instructed the cook to prepare the feast for the invited crowd, he specifically ordered him to save this premium portion for Saul [רש״י, רד״ק]. On a much deeper level, Samuel is hinting that the entire gathering and the public invitation were orchestrated exclusively for Saul's sake [אלשיך, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, this moment carries a prophetic message, with Samuel instructing Saul to wait for an appointed time the following year when his kingship will be fully revealed to the nation [רלב״ג].

Despite not fully understanding why he is receiving such immense honor, Saul accepts the gesture and joins the feast [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. To publicly elevate Saul's status even further, Samuel steps outside his usual habits and sits down to share the very same portion with him [אלשיך]. Together, they share in a joyous meal that continues throughout the entire day [מלבי״ם].
