שמואל א, פרק ט׳, פסוק ג׳

I Samuel 9:3Sefaria

Hidden divine providence often operates through the most ordinary, everyday occurrences to set monumental historical shifts into motion. A mundane event like a herd of wandering donkeys serves as the perfect cover for God's grand design. The sudden disappearance of the animals is nothing more than a divine pretext designed to arrange a meeting between Saul and Samuel the prophet, ultimately leading to Saul being anointed as king [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Practically speaking, this was likely an entire herd. Whether the animals simply wandered off the path or were stolen, they probably remained together as a group [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, their disappearance is not a simple misfortune. The animals are not truly lost, but rather temporarily hidden by God's providence specifically for the benefit of Saul's father, Kish, initiating the very process that will crown his son [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].

The decision to send Saul on this search is highly unusual. Saul is a distinguished and respected young man, and under normal circumstances, a wealthy father would dispatch his servants for such a menial task, not his prized son. Yet, God places the specific desire in the father's heart to send Saul out into the hills [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. He is instructed to take one of the servants with him, but this is no random selection; Saul is accompanied by the most elite and exceptional servant in the household [אלשיך].

Finally, the father commands his son to arise and go search for the animals [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Without realizing it, Kish speaks prophetically. By instructing Saul to arise, he unknowingly hints at the sudden rise to greatness and power that awaits his son, who is about to be anointed as king [חומת אנך].
