וַיְגַ֕ל אֵ֖ת מָסַ֣ךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה וַתַּבֵּט֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא אֶל־נֶ֖שֶׁק בֵּ֥ית הַיָּֽעַר׃

During times of existential crisis, when illusions of safety shatter, a nation is forced to confront a bitter reality. Faced with imminent danger, the natural response is often to seek immediate physical protection rather than spiritual refuge. In such a defining moment, the people of Judah chose to rely entirely on their military might instead of turning to God.

The primary approach among commentators is that the nation experienced the sudden loss of a false sense of security. They had long believed that the mere presence of the Temple in their land would serve as an impenetrable shield against their enemies. However, because of their sins, either the enemy or God Himself stripped away this protection, proving that the physical structure of the Temple could no longer keep them safe [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא]. Other scholars view this loss of protection in a more physical sense, describing it as the breaching of the city's defensive walls [מלבי״ם] or the collapse of a fortified structure [שד״ל]. A third perspective suggests that what was removed was a veil of illusion. After years of peace and complacency, the people's eyes were suddenly opened to their own vulnerability, forcing them to reassess their actual military strength [שד״ל, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אבן עזרא].

Once their defenses were exposed, instead of using the crisis as an opportunity for soul-searching and returning to God, the people placed their ultimate trust in weapons of destruction [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. They immediately turned their attention to the central armory built by King Solomon, known as the House of the Forest of Lebanon. This massive storehouse held hundreds of shields and defensive tools [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It earned its name because the vast array of weaponry stored inside resembled a dense forest of trees [שד״ל], though some identify this location directly with the Temple's own treasury [רד״ק].

Despite their desperate reliance on these weapons, their realization came far too late. It was only on the very day of the crisis, after their defensive walls had already been breached, that the people finally remembered to inspect their military stockpile. This was a basic strategic preparation that should have been completed long before the enemy ever arrived [מלבי״ם].
