ישעיהו, פרק מ״א, פסוק י״ג

Isaiah 41:13Sefaria

כִּ֗י אֲנִ֛י יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ מַחֲזִ֣יק יְמִינֶ֑ךָ הָאֹמֵ֥ר לְךָ֛ אַל־תִּירָ֖א אֲנִ֥י עֲזַרְתִּֽיךָ׃ {ס}

When facing a battle or a deep crisis, a person is usually confronted by two overwhelming obstacles: the physical limits of their own strength and the paralyzing grip of fear. The promise of divine support directly addresses both of these human vulnerabilities, offering a complete shield of practical and mental security. God stands alongside His people during times of crisis, providing the exact tools needed to face their enemies. To counter physical weakness and exhaustion, God actively takes hold of a person's right hand. This divine grasp serves a dual purpose. It keeps the person steady so they do not fall [מצודת דוד], and it infuses them with the actual physical strength required to fight [מלבי״ם].

This level of physical support was clearly demonstrated during the historical fall of Babylon. While the young, capable warriors of Babylon were killed in the conflict, the Israelites experienced a miraculous rescue and managed to escape safely [אבן עזרא].

To counter the second obstacle, the deep mental fear that comes with conflict, God offers a profound verbal reassurance. The primary approach among commentators is that a promise spoken directly by God provides absolute certainty, as He does not make false guarantees or fail to deliver like a human might. There is a sharp contrast between the reassurance of a mortal leader and that of God. If a human king tells someone not to be afraid, the king must still back up those words with physical actions, such as assigning guards for protection. However, when God speaks, His word is the action itself. The divine command not to fear is the ultimate form of help. The moment God speaks those words of comfort, the person is completely secure and requires no additional layers of protection [אדרת אליהו].
