Isaiah 41:7Sefaria

וַיְחַזֵּ֤ק חָרָשׁ֙ אֶת־צֹרֵ֔ף מַחֲלִ֥יק פַּטִּ֖ישׁ אֶת־ה֣וֹלֶם פָּ֑עַם אֹמֵ֤ר לַדֶּ֙בֶק֙ ט֣וֹב ה֔וּא וַיְחַזְּקֵ֥הוּ בְמַסְמְרִ֖ים לֹ֥א יִמּֽוֹט׃ {ס}

In an atmosphere of overwhelming anxiety and panic, people scramble to prepare for an impending threat, joining forces in a desperate race against time. Driven by fear, craftsmen urge one another forward, collaborating to build something solid enough to withstand the coming storm.

The primary approach among commentators is that this frantic activity revolves around the creation of idols. The woodworker, responsible for carving the core of the statue, constantly pushes and encourages the metalworker, who crafts the silver and gold plating. Terrified that the statue might topple or its precious coating might peel away, the woodworker steps out of his own role to assist the metalworker, hoping to finish the task as quickly as possible Alternatively, this scene depicts hurried preparations for war. In this view, weapons manufacturers and miners working with raw iron collaborate hastily to forge swords and spears for the approaching battle [מלבי״ם].

This tense cooperation is evident across the different stages of production. The craftsman responsible for the final touches—gently smoothing and leveling the material with a small hammer—impatiently rushes the worker who handles the initial, heavy strikes. This first worker pounds the raw metal with great force against an anvil or a heavy iron block The finisher hurries him along so that he can begin his own delicate work and complete the project

Once the components are prepared, the assembly begins. As the craftsman observes the metal plating fitting perfectly onto the wooden core, he is filled with satisfaction, declaring the connection secure Another perspective suggests that it is the woodworker who closely inspects the metalworker's soldering, offering his final approval only after ensuring the bond is truly strong [שד״ל].

To guarantee the creation will survive, the workers drive pegs and nails into the metal plating, anchoring it firmly to the wood. This ensures the structure will not collapse, decay, or separate over time However, in the context of wartime panic, the desperation is so severe that soldiers are forced to settle for merely gluing broken swords back together. They reinforce these shattered weapons with nails, hoping they will hold together just long enough to survive the battlefield [מלבי״ם].
