A vivid contrast between intense heat and melting snow paints a striking picture of the ultimate fate of the wicked. The primary approach among commentators views this imagery as a powerful metaphor for the sudden, rapid destruction of evildoers. Just as extreme drought and scorching heat quickly swallow up melting snow, causing the water to vanish into the earth as if it were stolen, the underworld will swiftly and effortlessly consume those who have sinned. Their end comes in the blink of an eye, taking them without prolonged illness or drawn-out suffering [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, תקות אנוש, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In this rapid descent, their physical form undergoes a complete and jarring transformation as they leave the world of the living [רמב״ן].

Taking a different perspective, other commentators view this imagery not as a metaphor, but as a literal disruption of the natural world. Because of the sheer evil of the sinners, the natural order breaks down, robbing them of normal seasons and the refreshing waters of melting snow [רש״י]. Building on this idea of environmental punishment, another viewpoint suggests the wicked are struck by a curse of unnatural, unbearable heat. Desperate for relief, they attempt to steal snow water to cool themselves, but their efforts are entirely useless. They end up experiencing the agonizing torments of the underworld while still alive. Yet, they are denied the actual underworld itself, meaning they cannot die and escape their endless suffering [אלשיך].

A completely different interpretation reads this as a realistic account of how criminals operate throughout the changing seasons. During the dry, scorching heat of summer, these lawbreakers venture out to rob ships at sea. When winter arrives, bringing freezing snow waters that make sailing impossible, they change their tactics. They retreat into deep, hidden hideouts on remote islands—symbolically referred to as the underworld—where they continue their life of crime and immorality safely out of sight [מלבי״ם].
