Just before the Israelites enter the Promised Land, they experience a profound moment of parting and a shift in leadership. A divine message is delivered at a geographically and spiritually charged location, carrying heavy implications for the nation's future. Although the communication is directed at both leaders, God speaks exclusively to Moses, giving him the sensitive task of conveying these final words to his brother [העמק דבר].

The nation sets up camp near the base of the mountain. Practically, a massive population could not physically fit on the summit, and the actual command to climb higher comes later [ביאור יש״ר]. The mountain itself is a striking sight in the desert landscape. The miraculous Clouds of Glory that guided the Israelites typically leveled the harsh terrain, flattening mountains to ease their journey. Yet, three distinct peaks were deliberately left standing for sacred purposes: Mount Sinai for receiving the Torah, Mount Nebo for Moses' final resting place, and this specific mountain for Aaron's burial [צאינה וראינה].

The exact location on the border of Edom sparks a rich discussion. On a practical level, noting the border distinguishes this mountain from another peak with the exact same name located far away in the northwest [רש ר הירש, מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, it clarifies that Aaron is laid to rest in a neutral border zone rather than inside Edomite territory. It would be a disgrace for such a righteous leader to be buried in foreign, hostile soil [העמק דבר].

However, the primary approach among commentators is that the proximity to Edom carries a deep moral message, directly linking the location to the timing of Aaron's death. By lingering near a nation rooted in wickedness, the Israelites allowed themselves to be negatively influenced, leading to the premature loss of their righteous leader [רש״י, צאינה וראינה]. Moses is tasked with explaining this difficult truth to the people. Even though Aaron's passing was already decreed, he might have lived longer had the nation not stumbled [אור החיים].

It might seem unfair to blame the people for merely passing through a geographical border on their journey. Yet, the Israelites actively chose to step outside the safety of the Clouds of Glory in order to approach Edom and engage in trade. As a direct consequence of leaving that spiritual protection, they lost the righteous man whose very merit brought those sheltering clouds to the camp [ברכת אשר על התורה]. Still, this bittersweet location holds a profound promise for the future. Aaron's life concludes precisely on the edge of Edom as a lasting sign that his people will ultimately overcome their adversaries and inherit that entire territory during the final redemption [אור החיים].
